#3 Rotterdam: a Dan Brown book

I was thinking about a release with a theme. But could quite make up my mind. One thing that bugged me was walking along Weena, a wide street in the centre of Rotterdam, that not many people passed by this route. Or if they did they seemd to be in a hurry.

Further down the street there were a few "beelden". One of these was in front of a building of one of the biggest industries in the Netherlands. I couldn't make out what the title and subject of the image was. And the building was so quiet during a Sunday. Not the right place. Not even on the sunny steps in front....

Moving on, I passed some nice statues by Willem de Kooning. Really nice, a "Sitting Woman". But there were some women sitting in front of it. And I simply didn't dare climbing up the green and leaving a book on the stone woman's lap. It was tempting... but maybe some other day.

I walked on. and I ended up on a square with some high buildings. Under one of these I noticed many people passing by from a nearby metrostation. And under it was a small memorial statue for people that were lost during the first stages of World War 2. This seemed to be a good place. The statue was a symbol for people lost in the War. The book title: "lost symbol"

Maybe a little farfetched. Maybe not in accordance with the idea of the memorial statue. I hesitated. Then I left the book. And walked away hoping for the best.

I haven't heard anything. A failed themed release? Maybe it was a bad choice to leave a thriller on such a place. Next time I will leave something more appropriate. A book about Zadkines statues or something. And I will look for another place for a book like this.

Second release: Karin Slaughter

So my first release was a bit hesitant. For my second and third release I had prepared a little better. On a Sunday I was going for a visit in Rotterdam. I had a few books registered beforehand. This time I knew a few about some places where to leave a book.

An informed newby
I had read the pages on the bookcrossing website under the headings "Newbies" and "Release techniques". Why should anyone wonder about release techniques. Well, the purpose of most bookcrossers is getting their books to other people who might like to read it, and maybe even get to people who will get into reading alltogether (or more likely into reading a new kind of book). They get really excited when the book they released will get a journal entry of the finder, telling them they found it, and later telling about how it was released again. But even though most will be reasonably happy if a book ends up on someone else's shelf collecting dust for a while, they will really love for the book to be passed on (and on and on).

Bookcrossing nightmares
One of the nightmares of bookcrossers is for the book to end up being picked up by cleaners and be chucked into a bin, never to be read anymore. So we will be very happy when we hear from a book - especially if it turns up after many years, or quite far from the place it was first released.

So getting a journal from a finder, even from an anonymous one is a thrill - and a relief as well. For this reason you will find questions on the bookcrossing forum about how to get a higher catch rate.... And how one could go about getting there. Does it make a difference how or where one does a release.

Bookcrossing dreams of success
It looks like there are many places where you get quite a good chance for the book to be picked up - and for it to get a journal from the finder on the site. Leaving a book in a place in nature seems to work well. Also to make it perfectly clear to the person finding the book that YES, this is a book that you (YES YOU), the passerby, can take with you.

Preparation
So this second time I was better informed about the how. Stickers on a book at all sides, cover it against the rain in special plastic bags. Paste a label explaining bookcrossing inside the book. Make sure it is registered at the bookcrossing site (it gets a unique number, its BCID). And perhaps add a leaflet about bookcrossing in it. So I had collected labels from the Dutch website. And I had bought some stickers about bookcrossing in the BD supply store. The books I registered were labeled, stickered and bagged. They lie waiting for their day of release.

Prepared this way I went to the train station. My second release was a small book written by Karen Slaughter, a mystery / thriller. I looked for my platform. Walked to the end of it. There I found a bench, no one around. I left the bag on the bench and then went and sat in the train that rolled into the station. And when the train left, I waved at the book still lying on the bench. Good luck!

And it was lucky. By evening when I returned home, I found that the book had been found, and a journal entry was made by an anonymous finder (an AF in the bookcrossing lingo). It said: "I found the book on the platform and it traveled with me to Rotterdam." Apparently, it followed me on the next train. ;-)

Yes! A catch! I was thrilled.

Zwerfboeken: first release

Spannend, een 'book release'
Enige tijd geleden vond ik een zwerfboek. Het idee trok mij enorm aan. Ik was wat druk de afgelopen tijd met werk. Nu in de meivakantie kon ik er eens beter naar kijken. Uiteindelijk besloot ik mijn boekenkast en -planken maar eens te bekijken. Welke boeken zouden anderen nog wel plezier kunnen doen, terwijl ik er zelf nauwelijks naar om kijk? Hmm, eens beginnen met kast met stapels boeken naast mijn bed, niet erg overzichtelijk.

Daar vond ik het eerste boek dat ik heb losgelaten. "Field of 13", een spannend boek van Dick Francis. Het leek mij leuk daarmee te beginnen. Het was spannend genoeg, voor een ander om plezier van te hebben. En het heeft mij weinig gekost. Ik kan het wel missen. Mocht ik toch weer eens willen lezen, dan staat de bibliotheek vol met boeken van Dick Francis. Afgezien daarvan; de man is onlangs overleden.

Waar en wanneer kan ik een boek bevrijden?
Op een dag dat ik naar Rotterdam ging, zou ik het boek loslaten. Ik had bedacht dat het station van Utrecht een goede plek was om te beginnen. Dat is achteraf tegengevallen. Ik was wat laat, kwam niet meer in de hal. Uiteindelijk ging het book met mij op reis naar Rotterdam. In Rotterdam barstte het weer van de bewakers en helpers die de beste plekken om iets achter te laten 'afdekten'. Ik deed nog moeilijk met veters strikken, in de hoop dat ze zouden doorlopen. Maar ik durfde daar ook niet goed. Groot station, wie weet of men wel heel nerveus zou worden van een achtergelaten pakketje... Pas op de thuisreis in de trein, vlak voor we Utrecht weer inreden, heb ik het boek op een stoel in de trein achtergelaten.

Die trein ging door naar Amsterdam, rond 21.23 op zondag 16 mei. Misschien een beetje laat. Ik hoop maar dat het boek door een lezer is meegenomen, die Engels leest (ook dat nog) en niet in de handen (en vuilniszak) van schoonmakers is terecht gekomen.
Tot op heden geen melding op de website.... jammer.

Bookcrossing community
Een groot genoegen om rond te kijken op de websites hierover. De Nederlandse site www.bookcrossing.nl bevat veel uitleg. Heel prettig als je de Engelse taal niet zo goed beheerst. De website www.bookcrossing.com is nog uitgebreider. Daar vind je vele mogelijkheden om met andere bookcrossers ideeën uit te wisselen. Hoe je het beste boeken kunt loslaten. Bookcrossers vinden het namelijk leuk om boeken in het wild achter te laten. Maar helaas komen die boeken lang niet altijd boven water, in de zin dat iemand terugmeldt waar het gebleven is. het is zelfs moeilijk om mensen over te halen om een boek te pakken. Het grappigste verhaal dat ik las, ging over een wild release tijdens de Book Convention in Amstelveen onlangs. Iemand wilde een boek oppakken, dat bij twee mannen in een plantsoen was neergelegd. Deze mannen wilden het boek zelf niet, maar keken de vinder eerst een paar keer vuil aan. Wie weet komt de eigenaar nog terug? nee, dat staat erop: NEEM MIJ MEE. IK BEN NIET KWIJT. IK BEN EEN ZWERFBOEK. Ondanks deze tekst op het boek, bleven de mannen boze blikken werpen, toen de vinder (een bookcrosser) het boek meenam.

Release technieken: opvallen en de goede plekken
Bookcrossers breken zich het hoofd waar ze het best een boek kunnen loslaten. Een van de grootste zorgen is dat een boek rechtstreeks de prullenbak in gaat. Hoe zorg je dat je boek opvalt, interesse wekt en wordt meegenomen en bij een nieuwe lezer terecht komt? Ze hebben er van alles op gevonden. Vandaag las ik een berichtje waarin iemand beweert dat de beste plekken eigenlijk redelijk afgelegen zijn. Waar de kans dat iemand de rust neemt om even goed te kijken wat zo'n boek nu is. De durf opbrengt om het daadwerkelijk op te pakken en mee te nemen. bijvoorbeeld een uitzichtpunt in de natuur, een top van een berg, dat soort plekken.

Mijn volgende releases
Eind mei schrijf ik dat er een aantal lange weekends aan komt. Dat ik "de afgelopen dagen behoorlijk wat boeken geregistreerd heb. Die kan ik mooi meenemen als ik weer onderweg ben. Waar ga ik deze keer iets loslaten en wat?" En natuurlijk hoe? Ga ik het weer zo schielijk doen? Ik neem mij voor langzamerhand wat brutaler te worden.

Het is een interessante tak van sport, dat bookcrossen. Er komt heel wat psychologie bij kijken. En creativiteit hoe je dat 'loslaten' op zijn best aanpakt.
